- 4. Description [Abstrak] : The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global economic development instrument, utilized by China in 2013 to establish cooperation with different countries in various regions, one of them is the Middle East region. China’s cooperation in the Middle East region is concentrated on certain countries with the abundant energy sources, one of them is Iraq. Iraq has established cooperation with China since 2003 focusing on the oil and infrastructure sectors, established strategic cooperation under the BRI framework in 2015, and then officially joined China’s BRI project in 2019. But behind the decision to join the BRI, Iraq itself still has vital problems in the economic, politic, and also security sectors. In this research, it was found that there are two aspects behind Iraq’s decision to join the BRI, namely National Interest and Regionalism. This raises questions as to why Iraq joined China’s BRI project in 2019. Therefore, this research is expected to examine more deeply about the reason why Iraq joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative project in 2019.
