  • 4. Description [Abstrak] : The association agreement between the EU and the Mercosur trade bloc (EU-Mercosur), finalised in June 2019, has been heavily scrutinised by the public and encountered increasing difficulties in the process of adoption by European Union member states, including Austria. This study aims to explain the reasoning behind Austria’s opposition against the European Union-Mercosur Trade Agreement. The research method used in this research is explanative by relying on primary and secondary data assessments. The data analysis technique used is qualitative-interactive. The concept used is the concept of Sustainable Development. The result of this study indicates that Austria’s rejection is motivated by massive destruction of the Brazilian Amazon through large-scale forest fires and Brazil’s environmental policies under Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency. The reason for Austria’s rejection is because EUMETA is in contradiction with the objectives of the European Union’s green commitment. Binding human rights and environmental standards with effective enforcement mechanisms are nowhere to be found in the agreement.
